The following is our current best guess about what weVi.tv will look like. Things may change and if you have an idea then contact us.

-
What is weVi.tv?
weVi will be a service that organizes video threads. A video thread is a recording that is registered with the site along with metadata (location, date, tags, etc.) that explains where and when it was filmed.
This allows users to contribute footage and be grouped with peers that were also at the event. Editors can then search for video threads by event, location and concept in order to find the material that they need to make cohesive narratives.
-
Who are the target users?
There are three classes of users that will be targeted: contributors, producers and content consumers.
Contributors have several reasons to submit threads, and weVi will support each one equally. Maybe they want to contribute to the historical record, especially for news worthy or activist experiences. Maybe they are looking for exposure for their skills but don't have all the material they would like. Maybe they just have fun sharing.
Producing is a broad group that incorporates editing, sound and graphic design. The core aspect of producing is to form a project. Producers complete projects from start to finish using available threads, or they may be recruited by existing projects.
Content consumers are the target audience for finished work. This includes media outlets, private groups or the world at large. They can count on weVi to help provide compelling stories and features.
-
What can they do with weVi?
If it involves event driven video, we will support it. We anticipate that some producers will rapidly create media packages by searching breaking news videos, while other groups will use it as a cost effective way to edit film from private events like weddings.
At present, weVi plans on focusing on the social organizational aspects of video production. The site will interface with existing social media sites to automatically grab video context as well as handle any payment transactions. Projects will be able to search for producers to provide services, either for free or for a fee/stake in the project.
There are no plans to make editing software or other toolsets, as those are well covered by other services.
-
How will copyright of video threads be handled?
Contributors and project owners may specify All Rights Reserved, Creative Commons Full or Creative Commons non-commercial. Both Creative Commons licenses allow remixing.
Projects will be registered either non-commercial or commercial. If they wish to incorporate content that is copyright restricted, the content owner will be notified. This allows the parties to work out a permission scheme and terms of use, including licensing or sale, which weVi.tv will facilitate.
-
How are project stakeholders defined?
A contributor of a copyrighted video thread is a stakeholder in any project that uses it. In addition, multiple producers may be added onto a project. It is up to the project to define percentage contribution and there must be unanimous agreement* about the percentages before the project goes to the distribution phase.
Contributors of video threads under Creative Commons licenses may request a formal stake, but it is up to the project to grant one.
-
How will weVi be supported financially?
weVi will take a TBD fee (under 30%) of all distribution and skill request fees.
-
How will distribution fees be allocated?
Fees will be allocated to the stakeholders as specified in their project agreement. This is why we require unanimous consent before distribution.
In addition, weVi will contribute 30% of all profits to organizations that promote media freedom and education.
-
Why are you going to Kickstart for startup funds?
We see weVi as a fun idea that we think is needed and can support various groups; we're not ready to make it serious by quitting our jobs and shopping it to private investors. Instead of focusing on the business end we want to run with it on the features end and provide what the community needs.
See our Kickstarter page for more.
